about john
trier
John Trier was
born in England and educated in Australia. Upon leaving school he
worked on the land for 15 years as a jackeroo and manager, until
settling on his own cattle property in the Beaudesert district in
1966.
In 1976 John
began his forays in to the craft world and eventually progressed
to using cattle horn as a medium for creating utilitarian products
such as buttons, lace bobbins and jewelry items. His interest led
him to undertake courses in jewelry making, silver smithing and
spoon making, giving him the technical expertise with which to create
a range of simple yet functional products combining the two mediums
of horn and silver.
Later experimentation led to the discovery that pewter was more
mellow and less pretentious a metal to use with the natural and
simple beauty of horn, and more suited to John's aim to produce
classically simple, yet functional and practical products. His range
comprises tableware - including assistive cutlery for persons with
neurological and physical disabilities, jewelry
items, buttons, and special commission items.
In 1995 John
was awarded a Churchill Fellowship, giving him the opportunity to
travel to Indonesia, Britain, France and Germany in order to study
the
techniques of traditional craftsmen in the horning industry worldwide.
Since such time John has conducted workshops in horning for interested
crafts people and exhibits his products regularly. His products
have been featured in style bibles such as Vogue Entertaining, House
and Garden and Marie Claire.
John supplies
top galleries throughout Australia and has exported to America,
Britain and Taiwan from his property "Tamrookum Valley"
in Beaudesert. Together with his wife Virginia, he has carved a
niche market for this unique, quality Australian product.
